Rugby League World Cup 2013

2013 Assistant Artistic Director

The RLWC2013 Dance Programme was the large-scale dance performances celebrating the Rugby League World Cup in 2013. It featured in the live, televised opening ceremonies at Millennium Stadium, Cardiff and tournament-wide half-time program including Old Trafford and Wembley Stadiums and performed by over 3000 dancers nationwide.

Directed by Jeanefer Jean Charles, it featured choreography by New Art Club and James Wilton with a cast of 50 professional dancers. The opening ceremony included special guests RLWC2013 Ambassador Gareth Thomas, Gethin Jones and former Rugby League legend Martin Offiah doing the jive with their original Strictly Come Dancing partners, Camilla Dallerup and Erin Boag.

The RLWC2013 Dance Programme was produced by Grand Visionary Solutions on behalf of Rugby League World Cup 2013 and supported with public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Wooden Spoon Charity, Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government, Allerdale Borough Council, Hull City Council and South Gloucestershire Council.

Additional support came from Dance Manchester, University of Roehampton, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Edge Hill University, Rugby League Cares, YMCA London South West, Calderdale College, Archbishop Sentamu Academy Hull, Leeds City Council, Castleford Academy and Neath RFC.

“[The dance programme] captured the imagination of the TV commentators and brought a wonderful sense of the joyous involvement in the Tournament of thousands of youngsters and their families, many of whom were new to rugby league.”
